A word from the van
The moves that go smoothly aren't the ones with the most boxes packed. They're the ones where the boring admin was done early: parking suspended, lift booked, keys timed, and the crew told about the wardrobe that won't go round the landing.
If you only do three things on this list, removers say: book early, sort parking at both ends, and pack the loft first. Everything else is easier once those are done.

Sources & methodology
All prices are in GBP, are indicative and come from the sources below. They are guide figures, not quotes. Sources accessed 13 October 2026.
- Which?, "How to choose the best removals company", 2026. Get at least three quotes, preferably from firms that visit; a firm's insurance may not fully cover items you pack yourself.
- Konnect You, London removal companies, 2026. Book two to four weeks ahead, or six weeks for summer and month-ends.
- Post Office, Mail redirection. Apply up to six months before you move. A UK redirection for the lead applicant is £45 for up to 3 months, £66.50 for 6 months or £95 for 12 months.
- TV Licensing, "Moving house? Let us know". Change your licence address up to three months before you move.
- Citizens Advice, "Moving home: dealing with your energy supply". Give your supplier at least 48 hours' notice, read the meters on the day you move out and keep a dated note, and give a forwarding address; you'll have 28 days to pay the final bill.
- GOV.UK, Start paying Council Tax. Tell your local council, or the council for your new area, when you move.
- GOV.UK, Change the address on your driving licence and vehicle log book (V5C). It's free, and you can be fined up to £1,000 if you don't tell DVLA.
- NHS, Register with a GP surgery. Register online. Registration usually takes up to 5 days, and your old surgery is told automatically.
- GOV.UK, Register to vote. Register again when you change address; it takes about 5 minutes.
- GOV.UK, Benefits: report a change in your circumstances. Moving house is a change you must report. If you're overpaid you may have to pay it back, and you could face a £50 penalty.
- Lewisham Council, Parking bay suspension, 2026. One example of council charges: £62 plus £56 per bay per day.
- GOV.UK, Get your dog or cat microchipped. Keep your pet's microchip details up to date when you move; you can be fined up to £500 if a pet that must be chipped isn't registered on an approved database.
